The Canon Eos Rebel T1I (also known as the EOS 500D), was released by Canon on March 25, 2009. It wasn’t until almost a year later that Canon released a very similar model, the Canon EOS Rebel T2I (also known as the EOS 550D) on February 8, 2010. The two models look almost exactly the same (the T2I is slightly shorter and thicker than the T1I); and the price difference is minimal. However, despite the similarities in price and looks, the real question is “How does the Canon T1I VS Canon T2i do in performance and quality?” First, let’s look at some of their basic features. The Canon T1I comes standard with an EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens and shoots a 15.5 megapixel image at 3.4 frames per second. It comes equipped with a RGB CMOS sensor that delivers 4,768 X 3,174 pixel images with an effective mega pixel count of 15.1 and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The T1I also has a 3 inch LCD monitor and ISO modes that include: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600, 3,200, as well as two high ISO modes which are optional (6,400 and 12,800). The T1I has a lot of bang for its buck. With a 15.5 megapixel image it produces an image that is a higher resolution than 12 megapixel cameras and generally costs less. The camera is very light and has an excellent shutter speed. Unfortunately the shutter is quite loud and could pose a problem for those who pursue wild life photography. The T2I also comes with the standard EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. However, the T2I shoots a higher megapixel image at 18 as opposed to the 15.5 megapixels the T1I has. The LCD has also been upgraded to a 3:2 aspect ratio with 1.04 million dots of resolution, very similar to the Canon 7D. The T2i has an increased shutter speed of 3.7 frames per second, an impressive feat considering it has a higher resolution than that of the T1I. The T2I uses the same ISO modes as the T1I but it has improved its movie mode ability, recording 1080p at 24, 25, and 30 fps. Another new great feature is the strangely contoured panel which reinforces and softens the area where your palm rests on the camera when you’re controlling the lens. Pros of the Canon T1I VS T2I Pros of the T1I: – The shutter lag has 40% less delay then the T2I. - It is slightly cheaper to purchase. - Has 30% less start up delay. Pros of the T2I: - Is quieter at a high ISO (.3 f-stops) - Longer lasting battery - Quicker shutter speed - Better light sensitivity - Better ergonomics - More impressive video mode - Has external mic jack - Larger image size (5184 X 3456 VS 4752 X 3168) - Higher quality LCD monitor - Has additional memory card compatibility (SDXC). Conclusion:In truth, though the T1I is a great camera for the money, it is well worth the extra small amount of money to upgrade to the T2I. In reality the T2I is close to the much more expensive 7D and is by far the best camera you are going to purchase for under $700.
